ANGRY PEOPLE… are seeking political office. Have you noticed the anger and hatreds in recent political races? Proverbs 19:12 reads, “Mean-tempered leaders are like mad dogs; the good-natured are like fresh morning dew” (The Message). “Hatreds” refers to people who can’t get along with others because of differences on issues. They are hostile in spirit, they hold resentments and grudges, and they are unable to forgive. Paul lists hatred as one of the things which keep people from inheriting the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21). 1 John 2:9-11 teaches that anyone who hates his brother (fellow human) lives and walks in darkness and that darkness will cloud his/her thinking. Proverbs 10:12 teaches that hatred stirs up strife. Proverbs 10:18 tells us that people hide hatreds with lying lips. Proverbs 26:26 teaches that people use deceit to hide their hatreds. Psalm 97:10 (KJV) exhorts, “Ye that love the Lord, hate evil” (not people). Psalm 119:104 tells us, “Through thy precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.” Jesus said in Matthew 5:43-48, “You have heard that the law of Moses says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect” (NLT). This year, pray for those who seek political office. Are you angry? Get rid of it. Show humility, guard your attitudes, correct your mistakes, keep yourself spiritually in shape, and concentrate on serving Christ and your country in righteousness and in truth.
