1 Chronicles 5:18-22… “The sons of Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went out to the war. And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur, and Nephish, and Nodab. And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him. And they took away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men an hundred thousand. For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God” (KJV).
Many in the world are saying that terrorism is the beginning of World War III. The word “terrorism” means “the systematic use of terror to produce anxiety; violent and destructive acts committed by groups to intimidate a government into granting their demands.” One of the main tools of terrorism is that of using suicide bombers. Another is the murdering of innocents in order to change governmental policies.
In our text, a band of terrorists, descendants of Ishmael, were using strike-and-run tactics, trapping and encircling the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh as they marched to Canaan. The two and a half tribes armed themselves and went to war against the terrorists (v. 19). “They cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him” (v. 20). The word “cried” means that they assembled for prayer. When our nation went to war against the terrorists there was no national call for prayer by the leaders of government. There was no seeking God. In our text, when the battle was over, one hundred thousand of the enemy were taken and many died. Note, “because the war was of God” (v. 22) or “the war was from the Word of the Lord.” Israel fought under God’s banner. If the war is of God, victory is certain. Many in our nation say that the war against terrorism today is a religious war. Isaiah 13:5 teaches that a nation from a far country will come and destroy Babylon (Iraq) before the day of the Lord comes. I am not sure if God ordered the war with Iraq. Saddam was a wicked dictator. But is the USA warring under God’s banner, or under some human political agenda?
The Ishmaelite spirit of terrorism is alive today. What is the thing that is terrorizing you? What Ishmael spirit puts you in fear? What lust are you having problems with? Like the two and a half tribes of Israel, put your trust in God and pray… and do battle at God’s Word and not yours. God cannot be defeated. The Islamic terrorists are many in number, but they cannot undo God. Psalm 91:1-16 is a psalm that protects you against the terrorist, and it all starts with “making God your place of refuge.”
