Releasing Your Faith, Pt. 1

Paul writes in Romans 1:17… “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith” (KJV). God has made it very simple. He has designed that believers shall live by faith. The word “faith” is used around 245 times in the New Testament. After being “saved,” our next step is not heaven, but life here and now. 2 Timothy 3:1 says, “You may as well know this too, Timothy, that in the last days it is going to be very difficult to be a Christian” (TLB). Faith is not like the spare tire in the trunk of the car, of no importance until there is an emergency. The devil knows that your faith has power to overcome him and that scares him. Your faith is the one thing he wants to take from you. He knows that “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV).

Someone has said that faith is the “hand” that enables us to receive the gift of Christ and to become the sons of God with power (John 1:12). Faith is the eye that looks into the unseen and beholds the things that are beyond human understanding (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is the heart’s response to the call of the Lord (Romans 10:10-17). Faith is the soul’s reliance on the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 1:12). Faith is the access into the presence of God (Romans 5:2). Faith is the wire along which the electricity of God’s power runs and communicates to us His words (Galatians 3:5, Romans 10:17).

Faith is a secure belief in God, trust in God, loyalty to God, confidence in God, having a strong conviction that God is real, acceptance of God, a belief in God that does not rely upon material evidence. The English word “faith” was first used in the thirteenth century. Prior to this the words “trust,” “confidence,” “abiding,” and “assurance” were used. In the Old and New Testaments the basic meaning of “faith” is “trust.” Both Jesus and the apostles used the Greek word pistis which means “firm persuasion,” “trust,” or “a conviction based upon hearing a word.” Years ago I asked the Lord to give me a meaning for the word “faith.” The Spirit said, “Faith is believing that God does not lie.”

a) Faith resides in your spirit. Romans 10:8“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach” (KJV). Faith enables us to know the will of God in advance. The men and woman of faith in Hebrews 11 had a word in advance and they acted on that word. Romans 10:10… “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Man has to believe the Word that God gives.

b) Faith moves to the soul and mind. This is the area of intelligence. Faith operates in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Titus 2:2 talks about being sound in the faith, “That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience” (KJV). The soul (mind) is the area of thought and emotions. Faith is stable. Faith is established.
