Don’t Reduce God To A Formula

Romans 12:2… “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you” (The Message).

It seems today that we are surrounded by literature which promises us the secrets of victory or the secrets to overcoming. Everywhere we look, we discover “steps to this” or “steps to that.” People, listen to me: God cannot be reduced to a formula. Many leaders are guilty of this. They receive some insight by the Holy Spirit, then build it into a formula. Magazines print it and e-mails forward it to others. People think they have found the ultimate recipe, but God will not let Himself be boxed into a recipe. Paul wrote in Romans 11:33, “Have you ever come on anything quite like this extravagant generosity of God, this deep, deep wisdom? It’s way over our heads. We’ll never figure it out” (The Message). Have you ever discovered that when you try someone else’s formula, it doesn’t work for you? We try, and all the while the Lord is trying to tell us that He will not be nailed down. Our carnal nature, however, keeps on repeating the method that God gave to someone else and we keep trying to “manage” God. God is servant to no man. He will not allow us to manipulate Him. When we try to corner Him, He turns a deaf ear to our requests, and our deepest needs go unsatisfied. God’s dealings with us are on a personal level; Jesus came to change people’s hearts. In Hebrews 13:5, Jesus said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (KJV). He wants to have a personal, intimate relationship with each one of us.
