Ten Commitments For The Christian Life, Pt. 1

Acts 9:1-2… “Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath. He was eager to destroy the Lord’s followers, so he went to the high priest. He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them–both men and women–back to Jerusalem in chains” (NLT).

Acts 19:21-23… “Afterward Paul felt impelled by the Holy Spirit to go over to Macedonia and Achaia before returning to Jerusalem. ‘And after that,’ he said, ‘I must go on to Rome!’ He sent his two assistants, Timothy and Erastus, on ahead to Macedonia while he stayed awhile longer in the province of Asia. About that time, serious trouble developed in Ephesus concerning the Way.”

Acts 24:22… “Felix, who was quite familiar with the Way, adjourned the hearing.”

The Way was one of the earliest names applied to Christianity. It means following the teachings of Christ and the course that He lays down. The Way refers to a people who have made a total commitment to Christ and to the ways of God that leads to life as He meant life to be.

Genesis 3:24… “[God] placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (KJV). The first usage of the word “way” in the Bible means “a path to travel on, a course of life, a mode of action, a course of human conduct, a way to power and rulership.”

A science professor was using rats in a science experiment. These rats had to learn the way to the cheese by going through a maze. Whenever they took a wrong turn, their noses received an electric shock; only the right way was shockless. When we as Christians stick our noses into ways that are not God’s way for us, we will also suffer “shocks.” God often allows the shock in order to save us.

Genesis 6:12… “And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth” (KJV). In Exodus 33:13-14, Moses asked, “Shew me now thy way . . . [and God] said, “My presence shall go with thee.” When you are on “the way,” God is with you. Joshua 1:8 teaches that if we read the Word of God, meditate upon what we read, and observe to do it, our way will be prosperous and successful. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Matthew 7:13-14 speaks of two ways, one which leads to life and the other to destruction. Jesus was not talking of our eternal destiny; He was talking about our life here and now. We ought to watch our ways because we often we make decisions that destroy our daily living. Psalm 1:6 teaches that the course of life (way) that the ungodly take shall perish or shall come to nothing.

Psalm 86:11… “Teach me Thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name” (KJV). “Teach me what is thy way, thou Eternal, how to live loyal to thee” (Moffatt). “Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you” (NLT).

John 6:68… “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (NIV).

Colossians 2:10… “It is in him that you reach your full life” (Moffatt).
