Matthew 7:6… “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you (KJV). “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you” (NLT).
It seems that everywhere we look these days there are warnings to watch out for people who will steal your identity or your precious things. Fraud is everywhere. We are exhorted to be alert and to be careful. You have worked hard and long for “precious things.”
Many times over the years, I have wasted hours giving precious things (the gospel) to people who refused to listen, to people who did not care. Jesus teaches in our text that our spiritual gifts are precious too. There are people so hardened that if you witness to them they will turn on you and trample the gospel message. The words “give not” is a command. It says, with emphasis, that there are things we should not do. “That which is holy” refers to spiritual things that you have gotten by seeking God. When you open your heart and share these things, you must be careful that you are not opening up your spiritual treasures to unscrupulous people. Jesus calls these people dogs, wild dogs, untamable dogs. Many people in society behave like these dogs. They can often found in church. These kinds of people will not submit to authority. They roam from one place to another. These people are not serious about their walk with God. They waste your time. They do not want to change, and you can’t force them to. If you want to witness to someone, the Holy Spirit will lead you to people who will listen and who want to change. Many people are searching for truth today. Help them find it.
