Revelation 21:9-20… The twelve-jeweled wall that protects the bride (believers)… “Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high . . . And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst” (KJV). The Lamb’s wife is the church. The church has walls of protection, and the church has enemies. 2 John 1 teaches that the church is called “the elect lady.” Paul teaches in Ephesians 5:27 that the glorious church is brought to Christ. Psalm 87:3 says, “Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God.”
The wall that protects the city (the Bride) had twelve layers. Each layer was made of a precious stone, and each stone has a specific meaning. Twelve is the number of governmental protection. The church is under the protection of God’s government. “The foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones” (v. 19). The order of the layers was very important. God wants order in all of our lives. When we come out from God’s order we run into trouble.
Jasper, the first layer–submission… This stone was blue-green in color. It was the stone of the tribe of Naphtali (“my wrestling,” the stone of warfare). Light does not penetrate this stone. It is unyielding in its nature. This was the bottom stone of the wall. It was the submission stone. Every other layer was put upon this stone. This stone was laid on dirt and grime. It stood in submission to God against all the powers of ugliness. The first foundation stone in our lives is submission. We cannot build good things into our lives until we have learned submission to God. He is Lord, and we are servants. Jesus said in Matthew 5:3, “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (KJV), or “Blessed are those who are submitted to God, or willing to be governed by God.” There comes a time in our lives when we must lay down our will and take up His will. If you resist submission you are standing against the will of God (James 4:7).
Sapphire, the second layer–hearing… This stone was the stone of Simeon (“hearing”). Hearing is laid next to submission. Matthew 13 tells of four people who heard the word, three of whom never heard properly and lost out. Attentiveness protects the church (believers). Attentiveness gives you security (Matthew 7:24). Attentiveness gives you eternal life (John 5:24). Isaiah 50:4-5 prophesies of the Lord that He would be attentive, not rebellious. Jesus was a good listener; that’s why there was power in his speaking. People lose out spiritually because they do not hear properly. Psalm 95:7-8 tells of people hardening their hearts; i.e., they closed their minds to the truth. Lazy ears are a poor investment. Many people distort what the Spirit says. They argue and reason against what God has said. That’s what the devil did in the garden of Eden. The devil distorts communication. Many Christians do as well.
Chalcedony, the third foundation–vision… The meaning of this stone is “a view or vision.” A transparent stone, chalcedony is a milky and grayish quartz. Next to hearing must be vision. There are things for the Bride to see. Proverbs 29:18 tells us “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (KJV). To have the protection of God’s government, there are things you must see. In Song of Solomon 4:8 the king took his bride to the mountains. There, he showed her how the devil births troubles in the lives of people. He showed her the cubs of the lions and of the leopards; in other words, he showed her the birthing of satanic activities and of the things that ravage a person’s life. People often wait until troubles are full-grown before they do anything about them, and then it’s too late. Vision shows you the start of the devil’s work. Vision isn’t just for heavenly sights; it’s for the revelation and for the understanding of the purposes of God (2 Corinthians 12). Paul exhorted the Ephesian church to have the spirit of wisdom. The old word for wisdom is “seer” or “prophet.” We are expected to be able to see as the prophets saw. When vision and the purposes of God come into your life those visions will change you and protect you.
Emerald, the fourth foundation–sonship… The stone of Reuben… Reuben was born to do the will of God, but he became unstable as water because of an immoral carnal weakness (Genesis 49:3-4). Wrong passions ruled him. Righteousness is one of the earth’s foundation and is a protection. God wants His people to be able to control wrong desires. Paul uses the word “inordinate affection” in Colossians 3:5. It means “love out of order.” Reuben lost his sonship because he thought his sonship gave him liberty to sin. His unrighteousness did not protect him. It will not protect you either. Hebrews 1:9 teaches that righteousness increases your anointing. Proverbs 21:21 teaches that righteousness will help you find genuine life and honor. Proverbs 22:11 teaches you that righteousness fills your mouth with grace. Have you built a righteous foundation into your life?
