Proverbs 14:14… “The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself” (KJV). Or “The backslider gets bored with himself; the godly man’s life is exciting” (TLB).
There is a good truth here… Men and women are affected by the course they choose. For good or for bad, their own conduct comes home to them. The backslider and the good man are very different. The backslider is filled with that which is within him and it is seen in his lifestyle. The good man is also filled with that which is within him, and it shows in his lifestyle. The evil leaven in the one leaves his entire life sour; the grace of God in the other man saturates his very existence. In each life, “fullness” arises from that which is within it.
A backsliding heart is filled with sorrow; the heart that is following God’s will is part of the permanent and is filled with joy and peace. The backslider is dependant upon outward circumstances; the good man is dependent upon the Lord who resides within him by the Spirit. Faith in the good man helps him overcome temptations, gives him assurance, and enables him to live by God’s grace. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (KJV).
