The Power Surge In The New Testament Church

The phrase “one accord” in the book of Acts means “to bring harmony; to be in agreement and unity.” One way to think about this phrase is to think about a thermostat: when the setting of the temperature on the thermostat and the room temperature is different, there is a power surge. The furnace comes on. There is a surge of power. Seven times in the book of Acts there was a “power surge” when the people were in “one accord,” and great things happened. I will list them and give a brief exhortation. The words “one accord are used eleven times in the book of Acts. Here are some examples.

1) Acts 1:14… “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren” (KJV). Here they were in one accord in prayer and supplication. Unity in waiting, power to wait, power over impatience–there was a power surge to obey the words Jesus gave them to wait in Jerusalem. This one accord produced a power surge for the receiving of the Holy Spirit a few days later. Our generation wants things done in a hurry.

2) Acts 2:1… “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place” (KJV). The unity in the upper room produced a power surge, and the Holy Spirit came upon the one hundred and twenty. The power surge released the power of the Holy Spirit. The power surge produced a wind, a fire, abilities. It shook the unredeemed community and poured out into the streets.

3) Acts 2:46… “And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart” (KJV). The one accord in the temple and breaking of bread from house to house produced a power surge of joy and gladness, and it added to the church. A power surge brought increase to the church. If there is an anointing in the church and in its ministries, people will come.

4) Acts 4:24… “And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is” (KJV). The unity in prayer produced boldness in the face of opposition. The power surge enabled them to be refilled with the Holy Spirit. The power surge produced great healing miracles. The power surge produced offerings to meet the needs of hurting people. The power surge helped them to give witness to the power of the resurrection.

5) Acts 5:12… “And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch)” (KJV). The one accord produced a power surge that released the miracle-working power of the Holy Spirit. This happened after the Ananias and Sapphira incident. The fear of God came upon the church. The people were in one accord in the fear of God. The word fear” as used here means “a great and exceeding terror.” They saw a holy God in action. Many people defiantly hold on to sin in church.

6) Acts 8:6-8… “And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city” (KJV). The one accord in hearing and heeding the word brought a power surge. Demons ran out from the presence of unity, lame people were healed, people with palsy were healed, and a once demon-filled city was filled with joy. Where there is unity there will be a power surge.

7) Acts 15:25-29… “It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well” (KJV). Here we see unity in the making of decisions. This unity created a power surge that brought wisdom and understanding to deal with hard questions. The answers that came were mightily approved by the Holy Spirit.
