“Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.”
“Under His Wings” by Cushing and Sankey
A fictional story told some years ago provides a penetrating picture of God’s “wings.” After a forest fire, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes perched on the ground at the base of a tree.
Somewhat sickened by the sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck the bird, three tiny chicks scurried from under the dead mother’s wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of the impending disaster, had carried her offspring from high up in the tree to the base of the tree and had instinctively gathered her chicks under her wing knowing that the toxic smoke would rise.
She could have flown to safety, but refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat singed her body, the mother remained steadfast. Because she was willing to die, those under her wings would live. Psalm 91:4 says, “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust” (KJV).
