What’s He Like At Home?

“What are the politics of your husband?” asked a canvasser. The wife replied, “When he is at a Republican meeting, he is a Republican and when he is at a Democratic meeting, he is a Democrat.”

“But,” demanded the canvasser, “What’s he like at home?”

“Oh,” said the wife, “At home he’s a nuisance.”

What we are at home is the test of who and what we really are. Psalm 112:1-3 reads, “Praise the LORD! How joyful are those who fear the LORD and delight in obeying his commands. Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. They themselves will be wealthy, and their good deeds will last forever” (NLT). When the head of the household is happy and full of joy, the children get a good education. A good example can be seen in 1 Kings 4:31. Speaking of Solomon this verse says, “For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about” (KJV). The father in this verse was Mahol, whose name means the “dancing of joy” or “the dancing heart.” This happy father produced four smart children. Ethan means “a continual feast; strong.” Heman means “faithful right hand.” Chalcol means “one who nourishes.” Darda means “having pearls of wisdom.” That happy father was worth more than one hundred teachers to his sons. Heman wrote Psalm 88 and Ethan wrote Psalm 89. Heman wrote about the causes of depression, and Ethan wrote on how to get out of depression. Mahol left an imprint on his four sons… the imprint of a father who loved the Lord and His commandments.
