Acts 24:16… “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men” (KJV). Someone has said, “There is no witness so terrible and no accuser so powerful as the conscience that dwells within us.” That’s what I want to talk about in this message. The word “conscience” comes from two words, “with” and “knowledge,” or “knowledge that is with you.” Conscience is the inward knowing of right and wrong. It’s God’s moral law within us. He put it there. The conscience is like the red light that comes on in a car if the level of oil is low. In our personal lives, the conscience sends off warning signals telling us that something we did, or something we said, is off-course in our lives and is in need of attention.
The conscience is like a thermometer. A thermometer measures your body temperature, but it does not change it. The thermometer, if placed over a hot stove, is not going to give the correct room temperature. So also, our conscience measures our conduct, but it does not change it. It’s our responsibility to change our conduct. Conscience deals with our integrity, our uprightness, our respectability, our loyalty, our trustworthiness, and the keeping of one’s word in the inner man. Many saints make promises they never keep. Breaking covenants seems to be the norm today. Many people feed their consciences with misleading information and then think things are still okay. They are not. If your conscience is not saturated with God’s Word, it will lead you astray. Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1:19, “Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right. For some people have disobeyed their consciences and have deliberately done what they knew was wrong. It isn’t surprising that soon they lost their faith in Christ after defying God like that” (TLB). Paul wrote in Titus 1:15…“To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted” (NIV).
What is your conscience is telling you needs to be changed in your life?
