(Part 1 of 2)
Exodus 23:25-26… “Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span” (NIV).
Jesus wants you well. He wants to give you a full lifespan. God’s will is that you live a full lifespan, and no one has the authority to change the will of God. The devil wants people so focused on their diseases that they forget the power of Jesus Christ, the Great Physician. He wants you to forget that Jesus is your deliverer and that He is on your side to save you and not to destroy you.
The purpose of this lesson is to build up your faith, and to give you tools to help someone else. Miracles of healing will draw people to Christ. Jesus healed the sick even before they accepted Him as their Savior.
Exodus 15:26… “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee” (KJV).
Healing came after obedience to the Word of the Lord. The nation of Israel was not diligently hearkening to God’s voice. They were not doing right things before the Lord. They were not giving ear to the commandments (rules of conduct the God laid down). They were not keeping God’s precepts (prescriptions for a healthy life).
Jesus taught that sin and sickness are often related. Note Luke 5:20-24… “And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?” But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house” (KJV).
If you are sick, pray first. If sin has caused your sickness, get that sin taken care of. Give the Lord a praise offering. If you are not healed, it’s not wrong to get medical help (James 5:13-16). The Lord showed me this many years ago when, after praying for a sick person, the sickness lingered and they asked me if going to the doctor was wrong.
1. The day of miracles has not passed… Physical healing is part of Christ’s ministry today. All believers are commissioned to heal the sick. Mark 16:17-18… “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” (KJV).
This verse speaks volumes. The words “take up” mean “to remove, to put away.” The word “serpent” means “a sly, cunning, malicious person,” especially the devil. The word “drink” means “to absorb into the mind.” The phrase “deadly thing” means “drinking thoughts, such as something said or a poisonous imagination.” People are sick because they have put into their minds something the devil has said. The Lord gave believers power and dominion over the works of the devil. (The serpent during the time of the early church was the Roman rulers who issued edicts to Christians to renounce Christ or else they would die. Many Christians drank in those deadly thoughts and turned their back on Christ. The book of Hebrews teaches this very thing.) Jesus said in John 14:12, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also” (KJV). The age of miracles and healing is not over.
