Year-End Clearance

Things I wrote down while reading and studying…

Ecclesiastes 10:5-7 teaches that many wrong people rise to power because it is the devil who is promoting them. When God promotes, He does it on the basis of faithfulness.

SECOND COMING… Many people want Jesus to return for the wrong reasons. They want to get off this planet because life is too hard. Some want Jesus to come back so that they can escape paying their bills, others because they do not want their spouse anymore. What delusion! What ignorant thinking! Jesus is coming for a glorious church, not a sloppy one. “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof” (1 Corinthians 10:26, KJV).

People sing the song, “I’ll Fly Away,” hoping that God will remove them from their troubles, but all around them people are going to hell.

GOOD STORY… A man full of zeal started a storefront church. He called it Almighty God Tabernacle. One Saturday when working late, the pastor called his wife to say that he’d be home soon. The phone rang and rang and rang. So he hung up thinking that he’d try again in a few minutes. He did call back and his wife said that the phone hadn’t rung, so the pastor brushed it off as a fluke. The following Monday he received a call at his office in the church. A man wanted to know why he had called on Saturday night. The pastor soon figured that it was the wrong number he had called that night and began to apologize for disturbing the man. “That’s okay,” the man said. “You see I was about to commit suicide and decided to pray first. ‘God,’ I said, ‘if you are there and you don’t want me to do this, give me a sign.’ At that point the phone rang and I looked at the caller ID, and it said, “ALMIGHTY GOD.” I was afraid to answer.”

QUOTE… “In the church today there are a number of doctrines that have grown bigger than their scriptural proportions and tend to obscure our vision of Christ . . . [These] have turned into unbalanced precepts that distract from the truth that is in Jesus” (Francis Frangipane, “The Days of His Presence,” pp. 75-76).

EGO BUSTERS… “He is so boring that even his inner man refuses to talk to him.”

“He doesn’t mind suffering in silence as long as everybody knows about it.”

HOPE… Lamentations 3:22-25… “The LORD’s love never ends; his mercies never stop. They are new every morning; LORD, your loyalty is great. I say to myself, ‘The LORD is mine, so I hope in him.’ The LORD is good to those who hope in him, to those who seek him” (NCV).
