Send Deliverers, O Lord

Judges 3:15… “But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer” (KJV).

There is a need for deliverers today. I had been praying for the prayer requests that came in the mail when the Holy Spirit said to me, “Pray that the Lord will send deliverers to heal them.” King David prayed in 2 Samuel 22:2, “And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer” (KJV). Acts 7:35 refers to Moses being sent by God as a deliverer. Romans 11:26 speaks about a deliverer coming from Mt. Zion.

The biblical concept of deliverance has a two-fold meaning. First, “to deliver over and into the possession and power of others.” Second, “deliverance as a redemptive act”; that is, saving people who are in trouble or in bondage and saving people who are in distress (2 Peter 2:9). Paul cried out for deliverance in Romans 7:24-25, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (KJV). Romans 4:25 teaches that Christ was delivered up for us that He might deliver us from everything that threatens us.

Mark 16:15-20 commissions us to take the gospel into every nation. This includes countries with oppressive regimes of all kinds. There is no nation that can keep God shut out for very long. Under communism, the USSR became a godless nation. They outlawed the Bible, killed Christians, burned down the churches, taught atheism… God responded and tore down the Iron Curtain, broke up the empire, and poured missionaries into it. Millions turned to Christ. God sent in deliverers.

Our own nation needs to learn what the USSR has learned: you cannot continue to push God out of society and hope to be successful. The Lord drew my attention to Ezekiel 37:1… “The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones” (KJV). Ezekiel saw the chaos, the divisions, the dryness. The world is full of lifeless people, hurting people, persecuted people, and sick people. Ezekiel saw people trapped in chaos, and by the word that God gave him, he saw them rise and healed by the power of God. God needs deliverers.

Pray that anointed and Holy-Spirit-gifted people will heed the call of God. War is increasing in many nations. Oppression of people is the devil’s idea. God’s idea and purpose is shown in Acts 10:38… “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Jesus was a deliverer, and often works through anointed men and women. Pray that God will raise up deliverers like the evangelists of old who were anointed and fearless, bringing the gospel to the unsaved, healing the sick, and setting the oppressed free.
