Genesis 6:5… “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (KJV). The word “imagination” is from a word meaning “frame of mind” and is from the same root word, “formed,” found in Genesis 2:7: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Man’s physical body came from the dust of the earth, but his inner framework came from God. God breathed into man His own mind, thoughts, character, and feelings. It is this part of man that is created in God’s image. The language of Scripture does not suggest that man bears a physical resemblance to God; rather, man is made to be like God in spiritual powers. Man was given powers to think, feel, discern, and communicate. God gave man a pure mind and a righteous mind.
In Genesis 5:1-3, Adam and Eve were created in God’s likeness, but Adam’s children bore man’s likeness and image. Man was created in God’s image, and God put into Adam His own life. The way God thinks was breathed into Adam. The serpent feared God’s intention for mankind and proceeded to corrupt the mind of Eve, and ultimately Adam as well. 2 Corinthians 11:3 tells us that the devil worked on Eve’s mind until he corrupted it. Ephesians 4:23 exhorts us to “be renewed in spirit of your mind” (KJV, see also Romans 12:2). Paul writes in Colossians 3:10, “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.”
When we are born again, our spirit is changed to be like the image of God. The image of God in Adam and Eve was defaced through sin and is restored through Christ. The word “repent” means “to change your way of thinking” or “to think differently.” The Apostle John writes in 1 John 3:9-10, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother” (KJV).
When the believer renews His mind daily through the Word, he then has the mind of Christ and he does not sin (1 Corinthians 2:16, Romans 11:34-36, 1 John 5:18). Hebrews 8:10 teaches that God puts into the born-again person’s spirit His laws, His way of thinking. In other words, God puts into us His frame of mind or His way of thinking. This is why Christians think differently and do not fit into this world’s way of thinking after they have been born again. Genesis 6:5 tells us that the people did not have God’s frame of mind. They thought evil and did evil. If God says, “I am the LORD that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26, KJV), then this should be our frame of mind. If God says, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5), then our frame of mind should think the same way. If God says, “[I] will supply every need of yours” (Philippians 4:19, ESV), then our frame of mind should think and speak the same thing. What comes out of our mouths must express God’s way of thinking. If you want to be blessed, healed, and prosperous, you must seek after the image of God who saved you. Think God’s thoughts and speak God’s thoughts.
